IWA 2014 - HK news in civilian products

I've seen several interesting things today, for example new Walther CCP with HK P7 style piston system, but now I want to cover some more HK stuff.

First of all HK MR223 and MR308 got overhaul to follow changes in HK416A5 and HK417A2 respectively. New civilian rifles have almost all features of military rifles, including RAL8000 color scheme. Almost. They keep heavy barrels and yes, they do not have adjustable gas regulators. Gas block remains same as on older version. Additionally MR308 gets new slim line handguard with Keymod attachment system in place of 3 and 9 o'clock rails.

HK also presented new HKS 243 - civilian G36 version that you can have in several flavors and coloours including classic handguard and folding stock and newest railed handguard and folding/collapsible/cheek-adjustable stock. There also is Keymod handguard for HKS 243 avaliable. Looks like HK really approves and idea.

Good info! Do you know if the American mr 762 and mr 556 rifles will have those lighter rail options? To me that would be a huge improvement!

  2. HK USA presented new rails on SHOT Show. Those from Oberndrof are only for MR308A3 so far (no plans for slim rail for MR223A3).

Do they typically release stuff in the US that they first intro in Europe? Any idea on how much weight the rails save?

    1. Typically they do. It can take time. No idea on weight savings, but grip profile is much better.

I should add that I am very interested in a hk 762, but the weight is concerning. How come the military version is 8.9 lbs, while the civilian is 9.9? Is it all in the barrel and rail? If a barrel reprofile to medium from heavy and keymod rails can save a pound of weight, then I will buy one for sure bc I don't trust the reliability of any other modern 308.

    1. Civi version weight vs HK417 weight is mostly in barrel (if all other furniture used is same). MR308/MR762 use same heavy profile barrel as G28 (G28 is militarized MR308). There is plenty of room for barrel reprofile, but thinner barrel loose some stiffness and accuracy can go down. Those rifles are made for precision shooting.

When I do end up buying an hk mr762, I will have to tell HK that they owe you a commission for all your great posts about them on the forums! Yeah, I realize some accuracy can be lost, but I think it would be worth it for losing a lb of weight or close to it. Maybe I will let someone else reprofile it before I do just to see, ha ha!

As an American with a few AR 15s and who has friends with AKs, I believe the number one thing besides cost that is hurting the HK - even more than not taking pmags - is the idea that non chrome lined is horrible, and not a serious use weapon. The posts I read from you and g3kurz changed my mind on that. Someone at HK should be paying attention and making sure to address this to all of us Americans who, at least in the case of HK steel, incorrectly associate non chrome lined barrels with the m16 failing in Vietnam.
